Let's talk batteries

Ok, I have a sneaking suspicion that my Scirocco wants a new battery for
Xmas.
The last battery I put in that car came from Pep Boys.......
Perhaps it's time to upgrade?  Aside from the smaller size, what are the
pros of a small battery like a Braile or an optima?
Currently the car is a weekend driver, with occasional mid-week duties (like
when my Jetta ate it's alternator belt)
