VW VIN# format

Hi List,
    I'm in the process of buying a '79 (online); about to send a down payment on it and asked the owner for the VIN# which he gave me as: 53920XXXXX [last 5 X's are numeric].
    Hmm... doesn't seem right. IIRC, a VW VIN# should be longer, and begin with 3 or 4 letter characters.
    Can someone one please enlighten me as to what is the correct alphanumeric format for a 1979 Scirocco VIN number?
