Wrenching is a learning process. I learned a good one a while back; working
on a small Caterpillar tractor, had to change fuel filter (located just
adjacent to the starter.). Checked that electrical Master Switch was turned
to "off" position, put my filter wrench (strap with a metal handle) on the
filter, just when the filter loosened and dumped about a quart of diesel all
over the works the handle of the filter wrench contacted the postive starter
lead.
Lots of sparks and excitement; damn glad it was diesel. Gasoline
would've ignited dramatically...
Lessons learned: two.
Lesson #1) To borrow a phrase from the late R. Reagan; "Trust, but verify".
Meaning basically... trust nothing. If safety requires that the electrical
system be inert, pull the battery cables off the posts. Takes a couple of
minutes, and worth the time.
Lesson #2) Good idea to keep a spare pair of shorts in your locker at work,
just in case... you'll probably never need them but if you do you'll REALLY
need them. 'nuff said on that...
