Gas in the oil, HELP :(
Just as a point of interest, piston rings will fairly easily let air
or fluid pass unless it's under high pressure. Pressure forces the
ring down on its seat and out against the bore. Without pressure it
isn't all that good of a seal.
If you've assembled a short block it's amazing to notice the amount of
oil that'll seep past the pistons rings simply from gravity.
In this case gas could either be seeping past the rings while the
engine is sitting or it could be forced past the rings if there is
enough of it that it causes the engine to hydro-lock. If it's
hydro-locking then that could also be part of the cranking problem
this engine seems to have.
Anyway, I don't think gas in the oil necessarily indicates her rings are shot.
