gas tank questions

i need to know how close the gas tank seams are to where i drilled those
holes.
i cant figure out a good way of checking to see if those holes penetrated
into my gas tank.
i did not drill the holes(previous owner did).
i first tried with a cut up coat hangar.
it seems like if i push the coat hangar in perfectly straight that it hits
something metal about 1/6 the way down.
but if i put it in at a different angle it goes down farther(not much
farther but still)(and it doesnt hit metal when it goes down).
so if anyone can help me out id appreciate it.
and Jim R if you read the this.
there is no smell of gas inside the car,im just being cautious because i
dont want to find out on my way to cincy that i have a gas tank leak because
i ignored this thought i had.
