pulled the hood latch and....nothing!

So I was going to add some water(the heater valve is leaking slightly and 
new one hasn't arrived yet) and
when I pulled the hood latch-nothing.  The handle is totally loose.  I am 
assuming it has snapped since it
seems unlikely that it became disconnected from both latches.  So what is 
my way in?  Try to remove the
grill carefully, and go in through there?
