I'm glad you got it worked out!

It was looking pretty desperate there for a while.

Uber Weenie LIVES!!!
Thanks so much Peter for the advice on the timing setup.

Here's the results and lessons learned.

Reset the timing belt tonight. Made sure the intermediate, crank and cam
were exactly aligned as Pete said.

Then still no start and a strong smell of gas..... I decided that maybe the
valves are not opening because the PO may have hosed up the cam or valves
with the timing that he FUBAR'd. The timing was definitely off. I opened
up the valve cover to check to see what was happening with the cam. All
looked ok, but..... it really didn't have any new oil up top. I remembered
that the car has set for awhile (1-5 years) before the PO picked it up. So
I start thinking they are hydrolic lifters and since I disassembled my 16v
head earlier this year I remember that sitting in the normal position
upright they drain off the fluids. So I put some oil in the valve area.
Just place the valve cover and buffer back over it to keep the oil from
being flung everywhere. Quess what? 8-) That's right it fired right up and
idled just fine... no rattling or anything.

So I have a running 92 Jetta 8v Digi for my daughter now. It's name is Uber
Weenie!!!!

Thanks all (doing the happy dance!!!!!) at least now I have 1 running VW.
8-)
