MK2 dash into MK1 help

So I got a 16V dash into my silver 80 which was actually pretty easy and fit
extreamely well.  Only problem is the S2 instrument cluster will not fit due
to the upper triangular piece of metal bracing the steering column.  It
could be removed and there will still be the lower mount holding the column
in but do not know how sturdy it would be.  Anyone ever do this conversion
and have some experience on what to do?  TIA.
