Emissions test.

After rescheduling the emissions test twice it was time, ready or not, to
get my 84 tested.
New engine, ditched the Haltech and installed Megasquirt II.
MS II is a lot different from MS I and I would have thought that I could
have used my nephew's setting to get 90% of the way there, but this turned
out not to be the case. Lot of setup issues even just to get an ignition
trigger input from the crank wheel and getting it to hot start.
So, after three weeks of messing around with it the deadline was here.
The good news is they only did an idle test and it passed. 0% CO and 16ppm
from an allowable 250ppm HC!
Plus they didn't drive it on the rollers and I didn't have to watch some
poor soul try to juggle the light flywheel, hairtrigger clutch, zippy
throttle and high effort short throw shifter.
The bad news is that during all the waiting the under hood temps got hotter
than hell, the fan was running all the time and the IAT sensor was reading
hotter than it actually was. So, the fucker was running dead-assed lean.
Well, nobody was paying attention so I opened the laptop and started
richening up the fuel table in the idle region. It obviously worked, but
the car totally runs like crap when the IAT gets heat soaked. Not going to
be a good traffic jam kind of car and probably not good sitting in line at
the drag strip either.
But, I passed!
Know the last time I put gas in the car??? October 2005!
Turns out I was an absolute idiot to fill up the car before the test.
That 10% ethenal in the winter gas? Yep it screwed up the tune and made it
run lean. Let the MS autotune on the way to the test!
It's not perfect and there are still a lot of things to do on it, but it
runs and I can start driving it again.
