Timing help
To try to keep this as simple as possible, with the engine at TDC and the
cam timing dot on the driver's side of the camshaft sprocket at least in the
vicinity of the top of the valve cover front flange, cylinder one will be in
position to fire.
Note, TDC is the usually indistinctly cast "0" on the flywheel and the notch
to the left of the "0" here is at 6° BTDC.

So, with the engine at TDC the camshaft timing mark should align with the
top of the timing cover ( I wish I had your year Bentley so I could
reference a Figure, but that's the one I don't have). If not you should
correct this first. Don't worry about the intermediate shaft. It's
rotational position isn't important other than it will alter the position of
the distributor but there are easier ways to fix the distributor postion
than removing the crank and water pump pulleys so you can remove the timing
belt cover. Follow the Bentley instructions on adjusting the timing belt and
don't over tighten.
With the engine in #1 TDC position the distributor and rotor should be
oriented approximately as shown here:

The rotational position of the distributor is only important in that the
distributor can be rotated to adjust timing without the 3 pin connector
hitting anything.
The plug wire for cylinder three should be right above the three pin
connector and cylinder #1 plug wire should be one position counter-clock
wise from that.
In the above picture the rotor is pointing at #1 and you can see the small
notch in the distributor housing right below it.
As pointed out in one of the other posts the firing order is 1-3-4-2 and the
plug wires should be inserted in the cap in that order from #1 in a
clockwise manner.
Let us know how it goes.
