Hi List,
    I've found the speedo to be a weak point in all Sciroccos (and other 
VW's); Mk1 or Mk 2. Doesn't matter if VDO or Motometer, there's a little 
nylon gear that's a press fit onto a polished shaft and it splits after a 
while, rendering the odometer section non-func. So the speedo still works 
(if cable intact) but odo doesn't work at all, or works erratically (usually 
hangs on "9"s in main odo or trip odo, more resistance at turnovers).
    There used to be a shop here in Colorado that repaired speedos; IIRC it 
was a flat rate ($70 or so) and they'd clean, lubricate, calibrate, and 
replace any damaged parts. Good deal, but that shop is no longer in 
business.
    Anybody know of a speedo repair shop in your area? The gauge itself is 
light and cheap to ship, and I think we're all going to have to find a way 
to repair, there can't be many more 'good' ones sitting around in salvage 
yards and garages. Any source for new ones/ anything from other models 
compatible? I'm going to be wanting one for a Mk1 myself, NOT the wimpy 
85mph it came with [81 'S' w/ a 16v... uh, 130mph -ish?]. There will be no 
sexual favors asked or given, cash only. And I don't know, yet, what t---e, 
a-----t w-----s... are... enlightenment please?.
