Ok, probably had it coming. But ever since I got the car running nearly
three years ago, the fuel pump has made a lot of noise. Lots of unhealthy
noise. But it's always seemed to work pretty well. Never tested the
pressure or anything but maybe that could have been the cause of the
difficult time in tuning the CIS. Well anyway, my girlfriend and I had
just made a 60-mile round trip to Mansfield and the car seemed fine. I
noticed once when I needed to accelerate a little faster than usual, the
car stumbled, which is something that it's never done. The rest of the
drive back was uneventful, but when I got back into town, I had to stop at
a light, and when I started to move, the car sputtered out and died. Lol,
probably not more than 2 miles from our apartment. I could tell from the
sounds of the pump that it was dead. (really gravely-grindy sounds, not
good) After a quick tow home, and a call to our local FLAPS, $110.00
later, I had a nice new pump. Also picked up a new piece of fuel hose to
go from the tank to pump. Uneventful installation, it's taking me some
time to get used to how quiet the new pump is. :P Also feels like the
car has picked up about 10 hp, especially up top. :D I have not
re-adjusted the fuel yet but it seems to be running just great. Also, if
it's not as lean in the upper RPM's, I might be able to add a bit more
timing as well. Either way, everything is running great now. FWIW, it
looks like the pump I took out was the original. 190,000 miles and 22
years aint too bad, really. :)
