Heater/fresh air fan wiring question

It's a running joke with friends/family that EVERY Scirocco I own will
have heater problems (and almost always within 2 weeks of owning it).
The 82 is no exception. The fan conked out shortly after I put it on
the road, but now that it's getting cold out I need to fix it. The
fan itself works great, with no signs of it going (which is nice for a
change!), but something in the wiring is fucked up. When it first
started acting up a gentle kick to the fuse box would bring it back to
life, but no amount of abuse to that whole area will help it now. So,
tonight I attempted to do what I've done 9 times out of 10 when I get
to this point - I simply bypass the whole fuse box and run a separate
fused wire right to the switch.
It didn't work this time. I hear what sounds like a single relay
click each time I turn the switch to another speed (but no click when
I turn it off), which confuses me since there doesn't appear to be any
relays in the heater circuit (other than the load reduction relay,
which I've bypassed by wiring the switch directly to the battery -
right?). Oh ya, car is an A/C model. Anyone know what the
clicking/relay sound I'm hearing is? Suggestions?
Thanks,
Mark.
