sitting in a gas station

On one of my drives from Florida to Toronto my alternator seized solid. I pulled over because of the squeal and smoke and when I figured out what it was I just took the belt off then drove it up to the next exit and called the local wrecker. They brought me out a replacement Alt and I swapped it in myself and was on my way with the old melty belt back in. I never did change that belt before I got rid of it.

Yeah, but on an 8V you only have one belt. You loose it and you lose the
  water pump.

It did happen to me once, and lucky for me I was within a mile from a
  Canadian Tire store.
I drove there and bought a belt and a vise grip, and replaced the belt.

  Cheers.
