sitting in a gas station

Back in 2002 I lost my alternator belt on my 16v on the PA Turnpike just
west of Carlisle, PA. This was more then 150 miles from home (then in
Langhorne, PA) and outside of my 100-mile free AAA tow radius. I pulled over
and confirmed that it was the belt, got back in and kept on driving, at
night. Radio off, interior lights turned down, not using the blower fan at
all, and low beams.

After 130 miles and a mere 20 miles from home running on battery no longer
worked for me and the car died. A call to AAA and the two wagon was on its
way. While sitting there waiting for the tow I thought myself, hmmmmm, if I
only unplugged one of the headlights I just may have made it the whole way
home! Damn it! ;-)

Got it towed home, pulled the battery, trickle charged it overnight, put it
back in. Drove to the parts store on battery and got a replacement belt. :-)

These days I always carry a spare belt because alt and water pump are one
and the same on both of my cars.
