Let me be the first to tell you 2 things:
1) Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!
2) Baby seats *DO* fit in the backseat of a Mk1.

Mine is turning 1 on Dec 1.  It's a blast!  I got him started early, he 
was at the Chicago Car Show, sitting in '06 VWs, in February at 3 months.

Seriously dude, that's great news, kudos!
