Is the 16V an interference engine??

Not if you're doing the 9A, no.  It's direct bolt-in using
your intake & exhaust manifolds etc.

FWIW, I tend to play VW's timing belt intervals a little
conservative - i.e. 45k or 3 years, whichever comes first. 
Cheap insurance IMHO.
