I've had Classic tags on my '83 Cali for about a year now and it is just
great! Rather then a $48/year registration renewal plus a little less then a
hundred for inspection and emissions I got to pay a $140.00 one time fee for
permanent registration and no inspection or emissions ever again. All I have
to do is keep it running, insure it, and put gas in it. The plate with
purple letters on white background is pretty cool too!
Right now my '84 GTI Truck is in the process of getting classic registration
as well. The $72/year truck registration plus inspection and emissions makes
the $140 up front charge even more worth it!
PA's regs on Classic registration can be quite contradictory. Some places it
says there are no restrictions and in other places it says there are
restrictions. The one thing that is without a doubt highly restrictive is
classic insurance. I won't get classic insurance because it has such little
coverage and absolutely crazy restrictions!
If you can go classic, do it!
