Unfortunately VW diesel heads are very intolerant of overheating, and
will warp at the drop of a hat. Although a machine shop will tell you
they can be resurfaced, listen to the Bentley and source a good used
head if yours is warped. The kind of stress that your engine was under,
as well as the symptoms it's exhibiting now, may mean that the head has
cracked as well. In order to fully inspect the head you need to knock
out the precombustion chamber inserts and inspect closely - the only
acceptable cracks are small (~1mm) ones between the valve seats.
A rebuild means nothing unless it was performed by a shop with
experience working on VW diesels. The head torquing procedure is
specific to the diesel, and two retorques must be performed, one after
the engine has been heat cycled once, and once again after about 1000
miles of normal driving.
