Complete (Headers/Cat?/Pipes/Muffler) exhaust for my Mk1 8V
When I put the 1.8 in my 79 mk1 last year this is what I did...
Kept the 2 hole manifold from the 1.6, had to drill out the studs and put
new ones in.
TT 2" double downpipe (got it for 90 bucks at a local parts house on
closeout).
Took it to a local shop I have dealt with for years (midas sucks and WILL
rip you off, go to an independent that has been in business a while). When I
called TT, they had all the stuff and it was bolt in but kinda spendy. The
local shop made a 2" pipe with a turbo muffler on the end, all welded. I
have used these a lot, they originated from a turbo corvair and are said to
not have any back pressure. They are quiet unless you are on the gas and
have a really mellow tone. My car is legal non cat and does not have to pass
emissions where I live, although it probably would. Mileage went from 34 to
38 hwy (at 60) and from 23 to 26 in town if I stay out of it (hah). Way more
power, and better mileage than the 1.6 ever got. Total cost 290.00 I don't
like doing exhaust work and getting rust in my eyes...

Subject: WTB: Complete (Headers/Cat?/Pipes/Muffler) exhaust for my Mk1 8V
I came into a large sum of money yesterday, so it's finally time for
me to start making the '80 right.
First on the agenda is a new exhaust to make the noise more bearable.
(Actually first on the agenda is more wiring tweaks - I was only able
to get a little bit done last weekend. Why do NO auto parts stores
sell relays?)
I'd like something that will fit right in with no welding so I dont
have to pay a shop to do it for me. That's probably impossible with
headers though. I'm not looking to skimp - but I'm also interested in
buying used or not going with the absolute top of the line. Anyone
have anything kicking around? Know of any great bargains? I'm
thinking maybe a TT setup from Peter?
Next on the agenda for the car will probably be putting in the motor
mounts that I've had for a year now and a new suspension with
bushings. I just want to tighten everything up and make it so I don't
have to apologize for the noise and vibration when people get in the
car.
