Finally got my 88 16v on the road!!



The coolant temp sensor is on the driver's side end of the head, generally around the coolant outlet casting and below the distributor.
I don't recall specifically, but it's either the smaller of the single contact sensors (the other being the oil pressure sensor) or the smaller of the two contact sensors (the other being the thermo-time switch for the CIS cold start injector).
As far as the coolant light, it will flash for a couple seconds after starting the car and also if the coolant level is low. I've never noticed it flashing consistently as long as the alt light is on, but OTOH my alternator kicks in and starts charging almost immediately, so I'm no help there.
