are all A1 downpipes the same



Nope.
    Different years have different pipes, and there might be some variation 
across models as well.
    I know of at least two basic types; the early A1's used a 6-bolt 
connection to the exhaust manifold flange, later A1's used a sort of conical 
joint held together with clips.
    There's also some flow difference between the various types. I'd suggest 
do some research and see which manifold/ downpipe setup provides best 
exhaust flow and then see if you can replace both (might as well install the 
best available setup while you're there).
