CIS gurus, please advise (tech)...

I had a spring get loose in the MAF plate assembly and go missing. I never did find it but used a string tied to the arm on the plate to open fuel to get me home. I don't recommend driving like this as I had to regulate fuel pressure by hand while driving, keeping tension on the string and tighten it while accelerating and dropping it between gears. What I'm trying to say is that spring wasn't resting against whatever it was supposed to be to provide resistance. My dorm mate's Fox is in the same situation but opposite, the plate is to far open at any given point. I'm just going to try to buy a whole new assembly to fix his. I bought a whole new air box top from a GTI to fix mine originally. The other thing I found out by taking a dead one apart is that some of those fittings have screens in them. I think there is a screen in the center of one of those fittings that is specific to the main injectors and doesn't have anything to do with the Idle injector. Good luck.

Initially sees like vapor lock, but if it sat for a day, that should
  have cured it.

Sticky Plunger? Isn't there a direct line of fuel to the cold start
injector? That could explain why the cold start injector had fuel, but
not the others. If I recall correctly, the plungers are matched to the
specific fuel distributor. That suggests that a tiny bit of debris could
mess up the FD. Maybe cleaning the plunger and its path might be one
thing to try. That's my theory, anyway.
