And don't forget about the collar issue on the outer joint. Just last night I 
went to purchase a set of re-man's ($60 each + core BTW!) and asked for the 
units from a '84 Rabbit (I usually ask for Rabbit parts on the general A1 stuff 
because of the stupid, empty looks I get when I say "scirocco"). After we get 
the usual automatic/manual question out of the way, he asks me "regular rabbit 
or GTi"! WTF?? He brought out the regular 90mm golf unit which had the collar 
and the GTi unit which didn't...my '81S of course has the non-collar'd units...

Either way, I'd take the one you have to wherever you're going to get your 
replacement to compare.
