more clutch crap

so, the (silly) haynes manual (can't get hold of a real manual just
yet) says the clutch-to-the-floor problem is either:
1 - broken release bearing or fork
2 - collapsed diaphragm spring in the clutch pressure plate
the PO told me the clutch pedal failed suddenly, without warning -
this makes me think it's No. 1 - in which case, i could unbolt the
little metal cover on the transaxle end to check out the bearing?
any ideas on this?
