Some recommendations from someone that has flat-towed a LOT of VWs.
1. Yes, upgrade your front brakes to 10.1" if at all possible. Rear discs
would be nice, but aren't necessary. Long downhill grades might make them
more necessary, though...
2. Weight the rear of the tow vehicle. It will be impossible to make the
rear of the tow VW heavier than the front of the tow-ee VW, but try. The
towed car will try to push the tow car around and weight is the best thing
to overcome that tendancy. That and smooth, careful driving.
3. Trailer brakes are a good thing.
What are you going to be towing and how heavy is it? A Sachs Sport clutch
is better than a 16V pressure plate normally. For trailer wiring, you will
need a little adapter to go from the VW wiring to a 4 plug. Avail anywhere.
