Water pump replaced.  No leaks.  Life is good.

Found a trick to get the pulley bolts off, and torqued back on, with the pump sitting on the workbench  -- put a 6mm allen key or socket in each of two of the bolt caps, then lay a big screwdriver between them and use it to leverage against the torque wrench, placed in the 3rd bolt.

Many thanks to you listers who advised me on this, I realize it's not that big of a job but it's the most complicated thing I've attempted on a Scirocco.  & well worth it -- to the tune of $200 dollars saved, which I can spend instead on MORE PARTS.  :)
