Depends on the year.  A 1975 Mk1 can have one of two different kinds
of 4-speed linkage, depending on production date.  Both were very
poor.  IIRC, no parts are compatible between the two or with later
versions, which first appeared in 76.  Improving my car required a
total linkage-ectomy and transplant, Sawzall surgery on the body, as
well as some small parts fabrication.
