Failed emissions
My car just failed the HC portion of the test, so I need to lean this
thing out a bit. In Chicago, we have a limit of 2.0 gpm HC, and my car
tested at 2.42. Im not sure how bad that actually is, but seems like im
going to have to lean it out quite a bit to be safe. We have to run on
a dyno, at varied speeds, not just at idle, so just fixing the idle
mixture isnt going to do much for me. It looks like the HC is spiking
on lift throttle between shifts(which is expected) but is hanging out
just at or over the limit at almost all points. The CO is just fine
(half of the limit), and NOx isnt an issue, which is good because I have
no cat. The cat shouldnt affect the HC level anyways, right? It just
catalyzes NOx and CO, correct(Its been a few years since my IC engines
class).
So what are any tricks to get this thing to burn a few more hydrocarbons
on the way out? I'll probably replace the plugs, maybe check ign
timing. Would replacing the oxygen sensor help a lot? And I seem to
remember a certain 3mm allen screw, but im thinking that just changes
the idle mixture, IIRC.
Any ideas Cali or NYC people?
