Have you read the Bosch tech information regarding diagnosing starter
problems? It includes something about the solenoid needing more
current to stay latched. When the starter motor first kicks over, the
current drawn is so much the solenoid opens immediately, cutting
current to the starter. There is a VW or Bosch kit with wires and
relays or you can (like I did) make it yourself.
Battery volts ok? Does it spin the starter normally if you short from
battery positive to the solenoid?

That is common practice for starters in automatics like mine. The relay kit you mention was called Bosh relay kit WR1

Although this could be the case, I would ges bad, connections, drain somewhere or bad starter before guessing heat-soak
I hope that at least this helps illustrate the kit and give you some ideas about it
