Exhaust size
Yep, there's definitely a lot of science at work, the bigger the
exhaust, the higher the RPM where the flow smooths out and you get a
nice scavenging effect. If you make it too big it will be way past
redline and you never get scavenging. You can lose a lot of power with
an exhaust that's too big. To get a well flowing exhaust, it has to be
the RIGHT size (what that is depends on engine/intake mods), along with
nice round smooth mandrel bends and high flow cats and mufflers. 3" is
something you'd use for a big block V8 with some serious work done to
it.

I understand that the performance exhausts are on the larger
side. This should allow more air through the system and
usually gives a slightly louder sound as well.
I would go larger.

So if 2" is good, 3" is better? Doesn't work quite that way Ed. There
are
some really good books out there on design of intake and exhaust
systems -
they are great to read before dishing out advice.
