preferred trans?

Depends on your plans for the car and what kind of driving you do.  I
had the stock 4 speed for years, which was fine with the stock motor.
I stuck with it for a while after upgrading the power and it still
worked well enough for me unless I added too much gas pedal (wheel
spin/torque steer) or wanted to cruise above 70mph or so (when the
noise of so many unnecessary RPMs got to me).

My personal solution was to get an FN with the .71 5th - same first
four plus the freeway cruiser gear which is quiet and very economical,
and the Quaife, which took care of the other problem.  YMMV
