Cop question
Tom has a great answer, but let me tell you what can be found in PA.
Pennsylvania's Department of Transportation is alergic to computers so there
ain't info. The year, make, model, and body style can be decoded directly
from the VIN number, everything else must be found out via paperwork from
the state. PA does not ask any questions other then VIN number and to see
the previous title when you register a car, so they don't know the color or
trim level.
Just ask the 337 and 20th people who get all insulted when people call their
uber-rare limited editions "a GTI", or better yet "a Golf"! ;-) There is not
much data to separate the models.
If anyone can find out how it is the insurance companies because they have a
reason to know, and they don't have all that much data either. The worst off
insurance wise are BMW M drivers. M's all start with WBS (BMW Motorsport)
instead of WBA (BMW AG) making it easy as hell to charge out the ass for the
extra oomph.
