Option Scirocco for me too, I just did a starter on the bug. Goes like
this. Find a hoist. You need a hoist. Remove belly pan/ upper sound
barrier~engine cover/ battery cables. (after lifting the fuse box off the
battery top.) Oh, and slack off AC lines (2 brackets) and move a rad hose.
Locate starter, try 17 and 19 mm sockets, realize you have to find an 18,
preferably a flat wrench, which you don't have. WTF?? Remove lower bolt.
Try 18 mm on invisible/hidden under "sharp plastic/metal cut you up
thingies" upper bolt, then realize it's a 10 or 13 or some damn thing.
remove bracket with sharp cut you up thingies attached, access 18mm bolt
from top,(in the generous 1/4" space provided) lift car, attach ratchet
from below with Mr 4' helper pipe, reef away. (see above, need for hoist)
Finally remove fender liner to access big wires on starter. Installation
is reverse of removal.
Scirocco? Find right sockets, disconnect battery, remove bolts,and wires,
you're done.
But I'd take either over an A2 with that (corroded) integrated motor mount
mess. At least our front mounts don't do anything.
