Once when friends of my parents were moving to CA, my mom gave them a
railroad spike and a huge ball of twine...

Mom: When you get to the Nevada/California border, tie the twine to
the spike and drive the spike into the ground on the Nevada side so
you can pull yourself back if CA falls in the ocean.
