Crossmember Bar design
I sir corrected... :-P I meant to say that the design of the front-ends is
only slightly similar, the bit that goes between the fenders and holds the
radiators... The scirocco has much more depth, and as far as I can tell, a
completely different shape, not only because of cosmetics...

Not to nitpick too much but "slightly similar" is a gross underestimation!
All the suspension and engine mounting points are exactly in the same place.
To the casual observer the chassis (as opposed to the external sheet metal)
appears virtually identical except for the difference in the height of the
cowl.
So, let's not skew the arguement too far in any direction.
Perhaps "slightly different" is more approapriate.
Or perhaps you can provide some hard numbers on the difference in material
thickness that will back up your claim of "slightly similar"????
