2k5 pics, now preferred format for scanned pics

For posterity TIF is the way to go. TIF comes as compressed or uncompressed,
the only difference is size, all data is kept, nothing is lost.

For sharing pictures JPG is the way to go. 10:1 or more compression over an
uncompressed TIF. However, it is a "lossy" compression. This means that you
can't get exactly back to the original version (but DAMN close most of the
time). It is always 16.7 (24 bit) color.

GIF is bad because it only supports 256 colors.

BMPs are rare and not supported by most web browsers.

Scan them into TIF and share them as JPGs.

Okay, now question, since I'm semi digital allergic...what's the preferred
file type for scanned photos? I can choose from jpg, gif, and bmp, among
others. I'll have to check, but jpgs aren't an option for one of the colour
(bit) choices, also, for web based stuff, "higher bit" colour is better or
worse? It obviously impacts file size, what's the goal there? (how big vs
how much detail lost...easy sharing vs lost detail...what's best?) And
what's the best file size to aim for?

Thanks, I'll screw it up anyway, but just wondering.

Cathy
