serious engine trouble
One other possibility to think of is that the teeth on the timing belt
may have stripped in one section allowing the crank to free spin and
nothing else. I had this happen many years ago with the '82. Granted
it was an 8v and we are talking about a 16v, but I would check for this
possibility before breaking into the motor to look for the cure to the
problem.

If the battery and starter are doing their job, then something is
turning.
Do you mean the starter is whirring but the engine is not turning over??
Sounds like the flywheel has sheared its bolts. If the engine won't
turn
over when you attempt to push start, then check the flywheel... What
does the clutch feel like?
