Can you send me some pictures (or post online) of those seats? I have
some of those in my basement, but I can't verify they are the same
model/design.
Oh, & congrats.

There is no excuse for that. I had a shell in far worse condition that
I offered up for free to my local VW club members. One of the members
gladly towed it away about two weeks ago and he is in the process of
bringing it back to life.

While I admit that the fella went to the extreme, cutting it up into sections for the shiz of it, I feel it is his property to do what he wills with it.
Speaking of that, I will one day (hopefully soon), have a 16V body sor sale. It will be just a body, glass, what is left of the interior and electrical, and no running gear. What is it worth? And depending on when this happens, who wants it?
Thanks, and sorry for the thread jack, although it may be pertinent...

In the center of the plastic baffle in the tank, there is indeed a round
screen, no more than 3 inches OD (IIRC). I fashioned a puller from a coat
hangar. You will have to pull hard to get it out, but it will come. I
think there was a ring that was attatched to the top of it, that is what I
hooked onto.
All this is from memory. Hopefully it is as simple as I remember (I just
turned 35, as I get older -everything- gets easier)...
David
Yep, it was easy enough, and to my delight/ dismay there was really
nothing in it. The filter is cylindrical and pulled out easily with the
trusty coathanger. I used (clean) offset longnose pliers to set it back
down in, then a screwdriver. So the car has a new coil and clean screens,
we'll see if it behaves if the road ever gets Sciroccoworthy. I hate this
time of year...

If it is loose, it's behavior may be iratic. I don't know what happens if
it is too tight. It only takes 18lbs, but apparently it must be right at
18lbs to work properly...

I was having the same problem with my mk2 rocco. Turned out it was just
a rubber gasket that goes around the lock on the hatch. :(

Hey All:
My old Mk1 hatch is filling with water and beginning to rust along
the outside rear. This is
where two pieces of sheetmetal are joined inside the hatch. Question
is, what's the path for the
water to get there? Via the glass gasket or the hatch seal where it
closes against the car?
Thx,

a whining pump will not be corrected by any fluid changes. once they get to
the whining point, they will stay that way until replaced. the plus side
here is that i've never seen one grenade or anything drastic like that.
that all said, it always helps to periodically change out the power steering
fluid, as its an unfiltered system. there is this orange bottle stuff i've
used. its marketed as a stop leak, but it does so by softening/expanding old
seals. i've had this work near-magic on a leaking rack (going strong still
for 2+ years, and i still have torn boots - still no leakage).

The power steering pump on my 16v is starting to make some noise like it's
low on fluid. Since I've basically done nothing with this unit sine I've
had to car, I think a flush and change of fluid is in order. Any
suggestions on a flush agent and/or fluid? TIA.

Al, is the power steering fluid that is typically available at a FLAPS
acceptable or does VW require a special fluid?
Thanks, Rick.

Actually I agree with all , except there is a FILTER in the return bottle,
undo the black cap (unscrews from bottle) remove carefully the plate and the
filter is at the bottom.. and last time I changed my PS pump I changed the
filter and VW had the part in stock still...
Lmk if you need the PN#
PS: A PS pump will whine forever, but with time (I took 2 years before
changing mine) you will find the steering wheels less responsive (sluggish)
at times. When you get to the end of life of the pump, you will actually
find the pump will have hiccups (belts slipping intermittently from the
internals of the pump "locking up and releasing".
Cheers

Yes indeed, that is Carrots, and no, Tosha, she's a left-hand driver
located right here in beautiful Midwestern Ontario, although she did
start her life on the West coast.
She's been to Cincy 4 years running, but sadly it looks like she'll be
on extended sabatical for '05, as she's been replaced in her daily
driver duties by an '02 Jetta TDI (affectionately known as "the
Appliance")
Cheers,
Drew

So I'm completing an impromptu seat track cleaning (20 yo grease + cold snap
= sticking seat pin) and notice that there's a 2-wire female plug that is
hanging down from the seat. Coming up from the carpet is what appears to be
the male counterpart. Were heated seats an option on an '86 16v? Is this
the wiring for it? More importantly, am I a couple splices and switches
away from heated seats?

That is correct. The heated seat wiring is a six-wire harness.

Is the Dextron II the Ford or GM version of ATF? What about the new ATF (universal) that is used in most transmissions now? Can the universal be used without causing problems?
Thanks, Rick.
