Speedometer - WTF?

I've been trying to get the speedo working in Gino since I
got him.  It worked for about two hours of the trip home,
and nothing since.  The screw hole in the tranny that I'm
using (4k) is partially stripped, so I found a slightly
larger bolt that seems to hold the cable into the tranny,
however here's the dilemma I have now.

The speeds indicated seem to be wildly innacurate.  4k
tranny (3.94 RP) and 100 kms indicated is only showing
about 2500 rpm, whereas it should be around 3200-3300.  I
*think* I'm using the correct gear on the end of the speedo
cable - it's the white gear.  Even so, it shouldn't be
*that* far off should it?

Sad to say that's the extent of my progress today, what
with inturruption after inturruption.
