Oil pump problem?

My '82(first Scirocco ever)Scirocco did that, I'd shut it off ASAP each
time, and pull over all worried and panicky, I'd pop the hood, look around,
I'd see nothing wrong, and it would be fine for a while and then it would go
away. I finally installed an oil gauge and when the buzzer came on, I looked
and happily saw the oil pressure was fine.

Yours is probably fine also, but I'd still check it, if I were you.

You can either get a cheap mechanical gauge, but if the line breaks hot oil
can get sprayed into the engine compartment, it's unusual for it to happen,
but I know someone it happened to.

I'd get a VDO Cockpit style(so it matches the oil temp and clock) oil
pressure gauge setup and electrical sending unit. It's easily twice as much
as mechanical oil pressure, but well worth it to me.
Look for a dual terminal sending unit, that way you can still hook up the
idiot light.

If it is low, pull the oil pan, and clean and inspect the pickup, and the
rest of the oil pump.
The later and larger 2L16V oil pump baffle fits the 1.7L oil pump perfectly,
and, since you have the larger oil pan, you'll be fine.

HTH!

Subject: SPAM-LOW: Oil pump problem?

Stupid question? How would I know if my oil pump wasn't working? I have a
1982 with a 1.7l and while the driving yesterday the oil light and alarm
came on a number of times.

I checked the oil level and it was/is fine.
