Wow, what a drive....
LOL, yeah Cali rocked for great driving. I lived in Seaside/Monterey, and worked in Gilroy, a wonderful drive to work and back home... 45 miles of pure twisty bliss! Can anyone guess where I used to work? :-)
I also worked in Carmel Auto (IIRC), and I would deliver parts up and down Carmel Valley Road, another twisty fun road. BUT, without a doubt, the most fun road IS Hwy 1. I still miss the ocean, but not the way-to-affluent-to-talk-to-the-likes-of-you Carmel folk...

fun!
the driving experience i remember best from that trip is coming down to the big sur area along 101 at around 3am - felt like miles of s-curves (i think it was 30?) - by the time i got out of the curves, i was so physically and psychologically exhausted (no power steering on the (heavily overloaded) civic) that i thought i was going to lost it on the next curve. so we stopped for a break. and heard, upon stepping out of the car into a dense fog, the biggest sound of surf i've ever heard in my life. i can only assume (it was literally pitch black) that we were just next to a sea-cliff. but i had the shakes too bad to try finding the edge...

Hmmm, I will pitch in my small experience...
Monterey Bay, CA., to Albuqurque, NM in 9 hours. I hovered at about 85 most
of the way, except when the lawuh was around. Fun drive, remember it well.
I would not want to run the risk these days, but I have 10 points ATM...

ok - my drive stories (not in scirocco's)
longest i can remember are -
Pittsburgh to Colorado Springs, nonstop, 3 drivers in a sedan - i
think 25hrs
lake charles, LA to pittsburgh, PA nonstop (except for gas and
waiting for fog to clear in tennesee for an hour or so), solo, then a
full day of work (8hrs - i think the drive was 21 or 22 hrs).

None. Twas my brother, his dog, all his shit, and me. We each did
500+
miles, then switched off about every four hours. Longest stop was
45 in
Memphis, TN for breakfast. And the fog in the mountains of VA
didn't help.
We would have taken 70 all the way, but it was closed from Denver
to Kansas,
hence the move south to I-40.
