Fuel Leak near fuel pump, '84.5

I noticed a fuel leak in my 84.5 Scirocco near the rt rear. It appeared
to be the rubber fuel hose (elbow) from the gas tank to the fuel pump.
So I replaced it. The next day there appeared to be a few drops of fuel
on the new hose. (The battery had not been hooked up, so there was no
power to the pump to pressurize it.) I thought the hose went directly
from the fuel tank to the fuel pump, but on further inspection it
appears to go up to a rectangular box (at least the portion that I can
see from below)that appears to be separate from the gas tank. The
diagrams in the Bentley (R, S, J, '80-'84) do not seem to show it. The
diagram shows the fuel hose at the "incoming" end of the fuel pump but
it does not really show where the other end of the hose attaches (in
order to get fuel from the tank).
The closest object in the schematic is the expansion tank, but it does
not show any connections to the fuel pump. What is the "rectangular box"
am I looking at?
