MKI starting issues

I picked up a donated MKI a couple of weeks ago and just today have some
time to get out and play with it.  I am trying to get her started and
here is how far I have gotten.  I have rerun both power and ground wires
from battery to chassis/starter, replaced the starter, replaced the
throttle body (new one was sitting in the trunk, and reset the timing as
it was off (re aligned all the marks down the side of the block)

Well I started on this adventure this morning as it would not start.
One thing at a time I did the above and tried to start her up.  Each
time it was closer, but don't know where to go from here.  

The symptoms, Turn the key, hear fuel pump, starter engages, motor
turns, motor fires (and back fires) sounds like it wants to run, let of
the key, it sputters and dies.  I have tried jumpering the relay. Same
results.  Called Al, he game me some ideas, none pan out.  Calling him
back in  a few as he was busy and not at home. 

Any ideas?
