Old style reverse light switch to New style

Stupid question, but il ask anyway since i need to get the car inspected and 
they gave me shit for not having reverse lights last year when they 
reluctantly inspected it.  Its an '81 S with the factory 2 wire harness for 
the little plug on the tranny.  I have a newer tranny with the rectangle 
plug with 4 wires..... 4 wires dont splice nicley into 2..  how do i make it 
work?  I guess i dont really understand how the thing works in the first 
place.
