You will very likely fuck up the bearing if you try to hammer it in
with a socket/extension.
Many machine shops will use special mandrels to install bearings
rather than a press. The mandrel will fit semi-snug into the inside
of the bearing, and has a lip that is large enough to catch the
bearing, yet just clear the bore of the bearing race... The mandrel
has a 1/2" hole in the middle to fit a rod which you hit with a
mini-sledge to (carefully and squarely) tap the bearings in...
If you've got a lathe you can make a proper sized mandrel relatively
quickly, or if you're resourceful perhaps you can come up with a
cobbled-together similar dealie with stuff lying around your shop...
