Update on my cracking problem - Ron Wood @ VW Specialties welded mine up 
back in .. '01?, and he made a custom bar for my car (pics at 
scirocco.org) and put Humpty Dumpty back together again.  Ron said mine 
was the "worst case he'd ever seen".  Several years and a fair number of 
miles later, the repair is fine, and the car was saved from certain doom.

The whole job set me back about a grand, but proved to be well worth it.
