Your belts might not have stretched all that much (good belts then) but they 
probably were worn down on the V (bottom) parts of the belts, which could very 
well be why they were squealing (sp?) so easy.  Your Lucky, I didn't use the 
AC in my first '84 GLI for only the winter, and it didn't work anymore in the 
spring already.  You went 3 years.
