car cover question

I have one of those MK1 covers from some company that was made in the 80s or so. They pop up on ebay once in a great while I think. It's in excellent condition, probably never used. My question is I would like to cover my car with it but is it ok for the car to get rained on with the cover on? Paint damage isn't a big deal as it's shot already, but I wouldn't want to have the cover start getting mildewy or rust to start forming from trapped water. We don't have a lot of rain, but enough for the next month or 2 where it will be an issue. I think it's made of nylon, it feels and looks like the material tents are made out of so I could spray waterproofing on it, but like tents, I would imagine the water would just wick in. So, ok for outdoor use and the elements or better for dry use only?
Dan
