OT: 4K on a 98 Golf 2.0L 8V will it work?

A '98 is a MK4, isn't it?  Those use cable shifted transmissions, so it would be a difficult conversion at best. Non-VR6 MK3 cars can use them, I think, but I'm pretty sure a '98 would be difficult.
